Valencia Erasmus Diary - Watching Fútbol in Mestalla

A few days ago, I went to watch a football match at Mestalla Stadium, in Valencia. It was a great experience - I had never been to a match before! But there is a first time for everything, right?

I met with my friends at a bar nearby and we climbed the never-ending stairs inside the stadium to find our seats. The best bit was, after we found our entry access, actually entering the stadium. It felt something like when you're at the theatre and the curtains open to a stunning set design.

It was so impressive and full of people and overwhelming (in a good way)! I felt excited as a child and was so happy to be there. There is such a big difference between watching a match on TV and actually being there!
I have to admit that I didn't follow the match itself much; I was more into contemplating the whole environment and cheerful atmosphere (we had a group of happy Valencian fans behind us singing and playing drums for the whole time). I am normally not a huge fan of football (or in Spanish, fútbol), which is why I had never been to a real match before. The game was between Valencia CF (which we obviously supported) and KAA Gert, a Belgian team, whose fans were dangerously drunk, but they were a few compared to the (surprisingly) calmer Spanish fans.

During the match it rained for the whole time (yes, probably one of the only October nights when it rained in Valencia), but we were well equipped and started to feel cold only towards the end. I have to say I really admired the people who stayed without umbrellas or raincoats - they kept cheering for the whole time despite the rain. Well done guys!

We left in a very good mood as we won 2-1 *jumps* and had a great time commenting the match. Will I go back to the stadium? I don’t know if I would go back to a football match, but I would definitely be up for watching some other sports now that I know how fun it can be!

  1. Wow! Big stadium! Nice view! I too have been to stadiums where I'm more captivated by the environment than by the match itself -- old Yankee Stadium in New York and night games in LSU college football stadium...

    1. Sounds good! From what I know, going to the stadium is a big event in the US. Hopefully one day I'll be able to try that out as well!
